Macs get WiMax/3G hardware courtesy of Clearwire

03 September, 2010

WiMax service provider Clearwire on Thursday introduced its first WiMax/3G modem that works with Mac laptops, as well as its first Wi-Fi hot spots with integrated WiMax or WiMax/3G radios. (Clearwire and majority owner Sprint Nextel both refer to WiMax as 4G, though that label usually refers to the competing LTE technology other carriers plan to deploy later this year.)

Next: The Smartphone and Tablet Wars

31 August, 2010

This week, Apple is expected to announce a refresh of several iPod products (including the touch) and possibly the Apple TV. The real drama remains with its higher-profile offerings — the iPhone and iPad — and last week, Qualcomm gave a credible look at their compelling future. However, with phones running on Google’s Android platform passing the iPhone in shipments, there is some doubt whether Apple can hold onto this lead.

New Xbox 360 controller with improved D-pad confirmed, $65 on November 9

31 August, 2010

Hey, what’s this? We just started hearing rumors this morning that Microsoft was planning a new Xbox 360 controller with an improved D-pad, and bang — Major Nelson just went live with a YouTube video detailing the new piece. The new D-pad is a trick new patented design that’s just as we heard from Joystiq: it’s a disc in the normal configuration, but a quick twist raises the crossbars about a quarter-inch, making it eminently more usable. (That sound you hear is joyous weeping.) The analog sticks have also been tweaked to be slightly more concave, and — wonder of wonders — the ABXY buttons are now translucent monochrome instead of colored. Wild. The new matte silver controller will only come bundled with the Play and Charge kit for $64.99 when it launches on November 9 in the States and replaces the existing wireless controller — it’ll hit Europe around February. Yep, it definitely seems like a major upgrade, but we’ve got a couple questions: when will it replace the packed-in controller? What about all the people who just bought new Stealthboxes and got the older controller? And, most importantly, when can we have one to try out? We’re pressing for answers and we’ll let you know — check the video after the break in the meantime.

Custom Droid X ROMs starting to break loose, eFuse be damned

30 August, 2010

Despite Motorola’s best intentions to the contrary, the Droid X has been making steady progress toward viable custom ROMs, first with root access, then with a recovery method… and now, at long last, we’re starting to get the first few glimpses at legit cooked firmware. The two options we’re seeing so far are Sapphire — originally designed for the Droid of old — and a so-called “FlyX” ROM from longtime contributor Birdman. In both cases, the benefits of eschewing Motorola’s standard builds are pretty obvious: you get Froyo, root, and a host of apps and capabilities preferred by the superuser crowd like surcharge-free mobile hotspot access. The process is a little involved to get these bad boys installed at this point, but with time, we’re willing to bet it becomes a pretty painless endeavor. Follow the break for a quick video of Sapphire booting into stock Froyo on the X — a tantalizing sight, indeed.

Samsung Galaxy Tab to have HDMI dock, leather case, and other sideshow trinkets

30 August, 2010

We’re starting to think Samsung has given up the pretense of keeping the Galaxy Tab’s details secret and is letting them all out now. Accessories for its upcoming 7-inch Android tablet have been spotted on one of Sammy’s many online portals, complete with pricing. The headline act here will be that “table charging station” on the top left, which happens to have a neat set of HDMI and audio output ports, making the Tab a quirky but viable choice for pumping movies into your HDTV. It’s said to be priced at €54 ($69), which we might consider expensive if it wasn’t for the keyboard peripheral costing €82 ($105). The relative bargain of the set is the leather case that doubles as a stand, asking for only €41 ($52).Samsung Galaxy Tab to have HDMI dock, leather case, and other sideshow trinkets originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 29 Aug 2010 03:48:00 EDT. ASUS NX90Jq now available… sort of

29 August, 2010

Remember this classic from way back at CES in January? We had such high hopes for the ASUS NX90 Jq. The 18.4-inch multimedia laptop boasts dual large touchpads and was designed by Bang & Olufsen’s chief designer… and that shows. This beauty also has (in case you forgot) B&O ICEpower speakers, a Core i7 processor, NVIDIA GeForce GT 334M graphics, and can house up to 1280GB of storage. Now, we knew this thing wasn’t going to be cheap from the first time we touched it — $2,500. However, we didn’t really expect to have to wait quite so long for it to hit retail. Well, if you don’t mind purchasing things on the “internet,” it looks like you can actually get one at a few retailers now for about that $2,500 price. Hit up the source link if you’re ready to put down some cash or if you just like to window shop.ASUS NX90Jq now available… sort of originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 27 Aug 2010 11:24:00 EDT. HP, Dell and 3Par: The Art of the Hustle

29 August, 2010

Last week, Dell cranked its wallet wide open and announced its intention to buy up a company called “3Par” for $1.15 billion. Putting 3Par under the Dell umbrella would buff up the high-end storage and large-scale backup side of its business and give companies like IBM and HP a new competitor to worry about.

Fully-functional Android port for N900 threatens to beat N9 to market

28 August, 2010

The NITDroid project has been slogging along this year in an effort to get Android fully ported to Nokia’s N900, and the progress has been promising so far — but wouldn’t it be nice if you could, you know, make calls? Looks like these guys are making some solid progress there with a new video showing both incoming and outgoing calls doing… well, something or another on the N900 side. Cellular data’s coming along nicely, too, as you can see on the video after the break — so here’s the million-dollar question: when this is rock-solid and ready for prime time, are you jumping ship or sticking with Maemo?Continue reading Fully-functional Android port for N900 threatens to beat N9 to marketFully-functional Android port for N900 threatens to beat N9 to market originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 27 Aug 2010 00:12:00 EDT. Windows Phone 7 Boasts 300,000 Developer Downloads

27 August, 2010

We are just a few months away from Windows Phone 7 launching. It is key the operating system and hardware perform well, but today, having only that doesn’t mean much. Third party apps are at least as important, if not more so, than the core phone itself. If only 10 percent of those that have downloaded the developer kit write an app, Microsoft’s mobile OS will have a decent application library in no time.

Lamborghini dishes out a Reventon you can actually afford: a 1:10 scale RC car

27 August, 2010

At long last even us plebeian supercar lovers can afford to say we own a Lambo. And we wouldn’t even be lying if we claimed it had an internal combustion engine (3cc, vroom vroom!), hydraulic shock absorbers, disc brakes, or permanent all-wheel drive. Such must have been the stringent requirements handed down from Lamborghini HQ to DeAgostini, which has scored the license to produce a limited run of 65 1:10 scale models of the Reventon. The radio-controlled mini-supercars haven’t been priced yet, but we suspect they’ll fall quite a few zeroes short of the real deal’s $1.2 million sticker.

Update: As it turns out, these come in parts and can be built up if you keep buying a collection of 65 “booklets.” Each one costs €8 and the remote control is priced at €60, leading you to a total around €580 ($737) [Thanks, wii_willie!]Lamborghini dishes out a Reventon you can actually afford: a 1:10 scale RC car originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 26 Aug 2010 20:52:00 EDT. Qualcomm job listing for iPhone dev guru sets internet absolutely aflutter

27 August, 2010

“The iPhone has no secret for you? Well, that’s what you think… join us and develop the most challenging product of your life!” So reads a now-removed job listing on Qualcomm’s website for an “iPhone Developer Guru” (still cached, thanks to Google). Responsibilities will include “iPhone software design and development but not restricted to it” as well as some Android and… oh, you’ve already jumped to conclusions, have you? The forerunners of CDMA technology asking for iPhone software engineering? Teasing with the most challenging product of your life? We wouldn’t fault for Qualcomm for a bit of boasting, and for all we know this could be much ado about nothing. Then again, we really don’t know anything, and this isn’t exactly some super clue in some giant mystery. Sorry, Encyclopedia Brown; don’t get your hopes up.Qualcomm job listing for iPhone dev guru sets internet absolutely aflutter originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 26 Aug 2010 19:54:00 EDT. Samsung Fascinate shows up in Verizon warehouse manifest, destined for September launch?

27 August, 2010

While Sprint, AT&T and T-Mobile customers have been enjoying their epic, vibrant and captivating Galaxy S variants for weeks, the only thing fascinating about Verizon’s take on the Samsung smartphone is how long it’s taken to arrive. Come September, however, that’s all liable to change, as a very familiar-looking SCH-I500 has just allegedly appeared in Verizon warehouse databases. Coupled with the fact that the MTV Music Video Awards (airing on September 12th) are now officially sponsored by “Samsung Fascinate a Galaxy S phone” and Verizon Wireless itself, we’re thinking it’s a safe bet that early September will find the 4-inch Super AMOLED handset on store shelves.Samsung Fascinate shows up in Verizon warehouse manifest, destined for September launch? originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 26 Aug 2010 18:01:00 EDT. The Sharper Image announces Literati color e-reader

27 August, 2010

The Sharper Image may not be quite the retail presence it once was, but it looks like it’s still in good enough shape to hop on the latest trend — it’s just announced “The Literati by The Sharper Image,” a $159 e-reader with a 7-inch color screen. That device actually comes courtesy of MerchSource, and relies on Kobo’s ebook service to get books on the device (which can be downloaded via WiFi). Otherwise, things look to be fairly basic — the screen is 800 x 480 (and not a touchscreen), and there’s apparently no web browser or other types of apps on the device to be found. You will get 150 free public domain books with the device though, along with a free case, and your choice of a white or black / brushed metallic model (which actually look to be slightly different in design). It also looks like you’ll be seeing a lot of it — The Sharper Image says that it will have the “broadest retail footprint of any eReader,” with it set to be available at more than 7,000 retail stores this October, including Bed Bath & Beyond, Best Buy, JC Penney, Kohl’s and Macy’s. Full press release is after the break.Continue reading The Sharper Image announces Literati color e-readerThe Sharper Image announces Literati color e-reader originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 26 Aug 2010 10:21:00 EDT. Sony delivers a new midrange 3DTV line with the NX810 series (updated with hands-on)

25 August, 2010

Sony’s finally taken the wraps off its latest televisions for the US market, carrying the NX810 model number. Available in 60-, 55- and 46-inch sizes next month, these give a 3D spec bump (and around a $200 premium on the MSRP) to the existing NX800 series of Edge LED lit HDTVs that came out earlier this year. Like the NX800, these feature a slick monolith design, built-in WiFi, widgets and an ambient light sensor to automatically adjust the picture in changing room conditions, but other than the 3D-readiness (and coupons for free Blu-ray 3D movies and PSN games, though it looks like you’ll have to pay for the glasses on your own) it’s hard to find any differences on paper. Football fans looking for a new 3D set may be tempted to jump on one and can check the specs and prices after the break, but we’ll probably wait around to see what a Google TV might bring to the table — and at what price.

Update: We got a chance to check out a few of these 3DTVs this evening at Sony’s open house in NYC. As per usual, the BRAVIAs were stunning and made us want to save up some cash to get one of these into our living room. And yes, we put on the 3D glasses and watched an assortment of clips. It was like those cute little bears in the snowy picture below were at the swanky event with us. Go on, you know you want to look at the cuddly things, err screens…Gallery: Sony NX810 3DTV eyes-onContinue reading Sony delivers a new midrange 3DTV line with the NX810 series (updated with hands-on)Sony delivers a new midrange 3DTV line with the NX810 series (updated with hands-on) originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 25 Aug 2010 16:41:00 EDT. Google responds to Android DRM breach, promises how-to on obfuscating code

25 August, 2010

Well, that was snappy. Just 24 hours after Android Police published a piece describing how easy it was to circumvent Google’s new Android licensing server, the Big G is hitting back with a brief response that it promises to elaborate on in the future. In order to address any doubts that developers may have, Google has noted that its new service is still “very young,” and “the first release shipped with the simplest, most transparent imaginable sample implementation, which was written to be easy to understand and modify, rather than security-focused.” Interestingly, the outfit doesn’t hesitate to pass some of the blame, saying that some devs “are using the sample as-is, which makes their applications easier to attack.” For those who’d like to better obfuscate their code, Google will be publishing detailed instructions on how to do so in the near future. We also appreciate the honesty in this quote in particular: “100 percent piracy protection is never possible in any system that runs third-party code.” As stated, the bullet points listed in the source link should be fleshed out in due time, but at least you hard working developers can rest easy knowing that Google isn’t standing by and letting pirates run amok.Google responds to Android DRM breach, promises how-to on obfuscating code originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 24 Aug 2010 16:49:00 EDT. LG C900 due to bring Windows Phone 7 to market near September 28th, according to Bluetooth SIG

25 August, 2010

The Bluetooth SIG has a long history of promoting its members’ “special interests” by leaking valuable tidbits about their handsets before they’re announced. The recently unearthed LG C900 is the latest of these, being pegged for a launch date “around” September 28th by the SIG’s detail page on the phone. The QWERTY slider, which is referred to in C900N, C900k, and C900B versions, will be available in Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America. Phone Arena conjectures that the launch date lines up with AT&T’s marketing materials timing and the slated Q4 launch of Windows Phone 7, so the C900 probably has a decent chance of being the first Windows Phone 7 phones to market if LG’s own GW910 or some more secretive set doesn’t beat it to the punch. Still, September is a bit earlier than any of the launch windows Microsoft has managed to let slip, and as far as we know Microsoft won’t even be accepting apps in the Marketplace before October.LG C900 due to bring Windows Phone 7 to market near September 28th, according to Bluetooth SIG originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 24 Aug 2010 09:59:00 EDT. Toshiba reportedly prepping glasses-free 3DTV for Q4 launch

25 August, 2010

Hot news out of Japan if you’re an eager 3D beaver: a report from Toshiba’s home nation indicates that the company has three models of glasses-free 3D displays in the pipeline, which are being prepared for launch “before Christmas” at prices of “several thousand dollars” each. As you might recall, we got our first inkling about Toshiba Mobile Display’s multi-parallax technique back in April, which is when the above 21-inch panel was being touted along with promises of eliminating eye strain and widening 3D viewing angles. We suspect that by now Toshiba has put a slinky bezel on the thing and started thinking up alphanumeric product names for it, though do bear in mind that queries to its press office were deflected with the boilerplate “no comment” response.Toshiba reportedly prepping glasses-free 3DTV for Q4 launch originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 24 Aug 2010 05:10:00 EDT. Exclusive: HTC’s Windows Phone 7-equipped T8788 breaks cover for AT&T

25 August, 2010

var digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/gadgets/HTC_s_crazy_boombox_phone_for_AT_T_running_Windows_Phone_7′; In case you needed any more evidence that AT&T is going all-in with Windows Phone 7, take a gander at this little beast, a phone known only as the HTC T8788 at this point (rest assured, you’ll get a snappy, memorable, trademarkable name by the time it’s on shelves). Though it’s a landscape slider, it doesn’t slide to reveal what you’d normally expect — a keyboard, that is. Instead, you get a speaker, an unusual (though not unprecedented) concept that should make this a decent media device… and the kickstand around back should help with that, too. We’d argue that this is the prettiest WinPho 7-powered device we’ve seen so far — not surprising, considering HTC’s reputation — though we’re sure plenty of folks would prefer the QWERTY. Check another shot in the gallery below!

Prius gets optional underhood, zombie-deterring noisemaker, sounds appropriately futuristic (video)

24 August, 2010

Electric vehicles and hybrids are here to save the environment (or at least kill your fuel bill), but if you listen to some people they’re also here to mow down our pedestrians thanks to their ninja-like ways. Nissan’s Leaf has already gone the way of sci-fi by offering a Blade Runner-inspired exterior soundtrack to make sidewalk replicants take notice, and now the Prius is joining in on the fun with its own under-hood speaker system. Curiously, this one will be optional, Toyota apparently expecting that purchasers are so philanthropically minded that they’ll pay an extra 12,600 yen (about $150) to protect poor pedestrians. You can see how it’s supposed to work in the image above, in which a Prius is shown emitting sound waves to deter a toupee-wearing zombie. But, if you’d rather watch a flashy presentation and hear it for yourself, check out the thrilling video after the break. It’ll make you wish your auto sounded like a hovercar.Continue reading Prius gets optional underhood, zombie-deterring noisemaker, sounds appropriately futuristic (video)Prius gets optional underhood, zombie-deterring noisemaker, sounds appropriately futuristic (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 24 Aug 2010 10:21:00 EDT. What Storage Is Best For Server Virtualization?

24 August, 2010

One of the biggest challenges to expanding a virtual server infrastructure is dealing with the storage challenges that often come with the deployment. The way storage is used in the virtual infrastructure is unlike most use cases. In this environment we want the same storage area to be accessed by almost every connecting server and each of those servers may have dozens of workloads trying to access that storage at the same time.

Dell Streak procures a hacked-up mini USB adapter, gets friendly with your dusty cables

24 August, 2010

Even if you can look beyond the SIM lock and the aging Android 1.6 OS on the Dell Streak, there’s still one irksome problem: the lack of a mini or micro-USB port (Dell clearly missed the USB party last summer). Dissatisfied with this state of affairs, John from Linux Slate decided to build an adapter for his tabletphone’s dock connector, which he confirmed to be PDMI instead of a proprietary design. The procedure was simple: John cut up his Streak’s cable plug, soldered a mini USB socket onto the board, and housed the new assembly within the Streak’s cable clip. Voilà! Until third-party USB-to-PDMI cables start to show up in the stores, it’s either this mod or cough up $20 for a spare cable from Dell. See the adapter in action after the break.Continue reading Dell Streak procures a hacked-up mini USB adapter, gets friendly with your dusty cablesDell Streak procures a hacked-up mini USB adapter, gets friendly with your dusty cables originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 24 Aug 2010 09:12:00 EDT. Cowon X7 materializes from the ether into a real life FCC applicant

24 August, 2010

Alright, so this isn’t quite like seeing Duke Nukem Forever popping up on Walmart shelves, but the Cowon X7 has been a long time in the making. Rumored since 2007, the Korean company’s portable media player has now finally sauntered up to America’s Communications Commission to dot some Is and cross some Ts. We’re let into the knowledge that it’ll come with a Bluetooth radio and a HDD of some kind, which GenerationMP3 speculates will be a 1.8-inch unit. Really now, a spinny thing in our PMP feels better suited to good old ‘07, but then if Cowon can combine some capacious storage with a large screen, it could still have a winner on its hands. Particularly if the rumblings of Android as the OS turn out to be true.Cowon X7 materializes from the ether into a real life FCC applicant originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 23 Aug 2010 07:09:00 EDT. First up, Josh is sitting down with Samsung Chief Strategy Officer Omar Khan to chat up the company’s recent Android sprint, then Engadget’s investigative correspondent Rick Karr is back to scale a skyscraper and check up on an AT&T team tasked with improving New York’s data infrastructure. Next up, Josh and Paul welcome fellow editor Joanna Stern back to the roundtable and we’ve got an exclusive live demo of Rock Band 3, plus a special Harmonix surprise… oh, and be ready to rock out to mind numbing chiptunes music, since Zen Albatross and invaderbacca are back for an encore performance! Seagate’s 3TB GoFlex Desk hard drive reviewed: hot, in more ways than one

23 August, 2010

Just under two months ago, Seagate pushed the capacity envelope once more by introducing a $250 3TB hard drive meant to be used by archivists the world over. It all sounds peachy on paper, but AnandTech managed to uncover a dirty little secret about the drive that serious power users should know about. For starters, the crew cracked open the case to find a 3.5-inch, five platter Barracuda XT — that’s a drive that Seagate doesn’t intend to sell for internal use until the end of the year, but it’s available now if you’re willing to spring for its enclosure. Reviewers actually fell for the overall design, but they noticed right away just how little ventilation options there were. Needless to say, that point came back to bite the drive once data had been transferring over for a few hours, as temperatures soared beyond the 140 degree Fahrenheit mark and transfer rates plummeted. Seagate affirmed that those high temperatures were within spec, but critics felt that running it as such for extended periods may harm the longevity; it’s obviously a gamble you’ll be taking if you need this much space within a single drive, but we’d recommend hitting that source link before making a decision that could burn you down the road.Seagate’s 3TB GoFlex Desk hard drive reviewed: hot, in more ways than one originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 23 Aug 2010 09:45:00 EDT. Cleveland approves $2.5 million for RFID recycling bins (update)

23 August, 2010

When it comes to trash can technology, there’s little doubt the United Kingdom is on top, what with the bomb-proof and RFID-laden bins denizens have been subjected to for years. Still, the US has trialed traceable cans for some time now, and the city of Cleveland, Ohio’s just decided to make them stick, shelling out $2.5 million last week for 150,000 households worth of electronically-accountable recycling. Unlike prior garbage tracing schemes, however, citizens won’t be charged according to the raw weight of undesirables in their can, but rather tested to make sure at least 10 percent of the recycling bin’s contents are actually recyclable — else face a $100 fine. That may sound a little pricey, but let’s face facts: if 91 percent of what you toss in your recycling bin is garbage, you’re not exactly helping the planet. they aren’t throwing recycling in the trash bin instead. If over 10% of a resident’s trash is actually recyclable, they’re slapped with a $100 fine, a costly reminder to take better care of the planet next time.

Update: We read it wrong; it’s actually your trash can that’s measured for recyclables. That makes much more sense! iPhone 4 cuddles up against telescope, snaps impressive moon closeups

19 August, 2010

What’s a boy to do when he desperately needs a portfolio full of galactic imagery of his own doing? In most cases, we’d suggest he grab up a telescope (or one of these), the biggest DSLR he can find and a planetary expert who knows a thing or two about exposure. But thanks to a mod that’s becoming more and more common these days, it seems that you can replace the latter recommendations with an iPhone 4. Yep — Apple’s latest smartphone, when paired up with a miniature tripod mount and a telescope, can apparently take lovely shots of our dear moon, and if you’re struggling to actually spot it, we hear that Planisphere app is pretty handy. Raumfeld’s 2Raumfeld multiroom audio system reviewed, deemed sweet but no Sonos

19 August, 2010

Despite the bevy of multimedia streamers beating down your door, there are still few options available for high-end multiroom audio, and until recently the ones you’d likely consider would go by the name of Sonos. Judging by a recent UK review, that hasn’t entirely changed, but a two-speaker WiFi-based setup by Germany’s Raumfeld reportedly offers a reasonable challenge to the Sonos hegemony. PC Pro said the 2Raumfeld package “knocks the equivalent Sonos 250 into a cocked hat” when it came to quality sound thanks to a pair of Adam Audio-designed speakers, and praised the minimalist design and ease of setup even as minor annoyances (like the pairs of ‘wireless’ speakers that have to be strung together) popped up. It seems the only real flies in the ointment are the limited media browsing options available — that sexy silver knob and touchscreen aren’t enough — and the fact that you can roll your own Sonos mesh network for less than Raumfeld’s €1,225 (about $1,575) asking price, which kind of defeats the point. Read the full review at our source link.Raumfeld’s 2Raumfeld multiroom audio system reviewed, deemed sweet but no Sonos originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 19 Aug 2010 13:59:00 EDT. Sansa Fuze+ leaks out with slotRadio support, 24 hours of battery life

19 August, 2010

And here we thought SanDisk had up and buried its once-thriving Sansa PMP line. After all — it was this company’s CEO that said “you can’t out-iPod the iPod.” For whatever reason, it looks as if the memory mainstay is about to try its hand once more in the saturated media player market, with a Sansa Fuze+ rumored for release in the near term. As you can clearly see above, there won’t be anything too special about the Fuze+, though the 2.4-inch QVGA display, capacitive touch controls and inbuilt FM tuner are certainly appreciated. It’ll ship in 4GB, 8GB and 16GB flavors, supporting the usual file formats (AAC, MP3, WMA, OGG, FLAC, Audible, MPEG4, H.264, WMV, etc.) and offering a rechargeable battery good for 24 hours on the audio side and 5 hours on the video side. USB 2.0 support is thrown in, as is the absolutely riveting confirmation that it’ll be “ready for slotRadio and slotMusic memory cards.” Knowing that, we aren’t so sure if our minds can take the wait till September 12th, but we’ll do our best.Sansa Fuze+ leaks out with slotRadio support, 24 hours of battery life originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 18 Aug 2010 17:29:00 EDT. Peter Molyneux brings Milo, Kinect, and snails to the TED stage

19 August, 2010

Poor Milo. Our virtual friend has been in our heart for about as long as Kinect (née Project Natal) has been in the public eye, always doodling, always playing with snail, rarely able to escape the confines of dark developer studio. When we talked to Milo’s “father” Peter Molyneux at the last Engadget Show, he kept referencing this TED Talk demo he recently gave, and sure enough, video of that speech is now available online. The 11-minute presentation delves into a number of the setups / “magician’s tricks” used to make Milo an interactive and at times empathetic character, and how natural voice recognition was implemented (thanks in part to Microsoft’s TellMe database) so that the player isn’t limited to simple yes and no responses. Curious about the moral ramifications of an artificial adolescent aggressive to mollusk? Definitely worth a look, as is our last Engadget Show episode if you missed it; video after the break.Continue reading Peter Molyneux brings Milo, Kinect, and snails to the TED stagePeter Molyneux brings Milo, Kinect, and snails to the TED stage originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 19 Aug 2010 00:57:00 EDT. What’s the date today, middle of August? Great, so we can now say with scientific certainty that it takes four and a half months to bring an excellent April Fools’ idea to market. That’s the total gap in time between the unveiling of the jokey iCade by the writers at ThinkGeek and the “for auction” sign going up on the Freekade arcade cabinet. This nostalgia-infused iPad accessory has now added a veneer of style to its retro control scheme, with “walnut effect” sides and a matte black finish. It interfaces with your slate via Bluetooth and (provided you’ve danced the jailbreaking jig) will play along with NES, SNES and PSX emulators obtainable from the Cydia store. You’ll find its latest demo video after the break and can track the auction’s progress at the source link below.Continue reading Freekade, the iPad arcade cabinet, goes up for auction (video)Freekade, the iPad arcade cabinet, goes up for auction (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 18 Aug 2010 06:39:00 EDT. Sony MDR-J10 Headphones Review

18 August, 2010

I decided I need to get in shape. What does a Gadgeteer do when he wants to get into shape? He (or at least me) looks for a technological solution. PS3 gets Titanium Blue makeover for Gran Turismo 5 launch bundle; landing in Japan on November 3

18 August, 2010

Shock of all horrors, Gran Turismo 5 will actually, finally launch in Japan and Europe on November 3. Of course, being more concerned with hardware as we are, our excitement is focused on the rich blue hue that will adorn PS3 consoles bundled with the grandiosely delayed racing game over in Nippon this fall. The ¥35,980 ($421) Gran Turismo 5 Racing Pack will be composed of a Limited Edition copy of the game plus a repainted skinny PlayStation 3 with a 160GB hard drive. Time to give your old importer buddy a call, eh?Gallery: PS3 gets Titanium Blue makeover for Gran Turismo 5 launch bundlePS3 gets Titanium Blue makeover for Gran Turismo 5 launch bundle; landing in Japan on November 3 originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 18 Aug 2010 05:26:00 EDT. So Google Thinks It Can Dance With the Devil?

18 August, 2010

When reports surfaced last week that Verizon and Google were privately working out a deal that more or less flew in the face of what we thought was Google’s stance on Net neutrality, the company was eager to issue denials. At least, it denied that things were playing out exactly as they’d been reported in The New York Times. It turns out that Google was in fact hammering out an agreement with Verizon.

Windows Home Server ‘Vail’ sees new beta release, adds OS X support

17 August, 2010

It’s not the biggest of releases, but progress is progress at this point. Since launching in late April, Microsoft has been rather mum on the future of its latest Windows Home Server build. This week, however, the second major beta release has been let loose into the wilds, with Vail’s most recent build now available to download there in the source link. The Big M doesn’t go into great detail on what all has been added and / or changed, only saying that this new version has “plenty of enhancements and improvements over the original.” The so-called “Preview” also adds support for Mac OS X backups, though users should know that storage check and repair (among other things, most likely) aren’t exactly working seamlessly. But hey, that’s what you get for living on the beta, right?Windows Home Server ‘Vail’ sees new beta release, adds OS X support originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 17 Aug 2010 11:20:00 EDT. Nook for iPhone, iPad and PC see updates, slew of new features in tow

17 August, 2010

Barnes & Noble told us this update was in the pipeline when it introduced Nook for Android, and sure enough, said update is hitting the intertubes this fine morning. The iPhone and iPod touch version of the Nook app is said to be completely overhauled, while the iPad edition is the company’s first to offer an in-app “rating” feature. In case you couldn’t guess, the former also adds support for the iPhone 4’s Retina Display, while also tossing in a slew of new customization options (themes, day / night content options, line spacing, font styles, preferred justification, previews, etc.). Finally, today also marks the reintroduction of the Nook for PC client, though it seems that most of the fanciful new features are reserved for the more portable versions. Hop on past the break for the full skinny, and tap that source link to get to downloadin’.Continue reading Nook for iPhone, iPad and PC see updates, slew of new features in towNook for iPhone, iPad and PC see updates, slew of new features in tow originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 17 Aug 2010 08:15:00 EDT. Philips’ Android-powered GoGear Connect PMP seemingly on sale overseas

16 August, 2010

We suppose it could always be a glitch of some sort, but Argos isn’t typically the kind of retailer to add products to its library with no intention of hawking them. First spotted back in February (with a pleasing dose of steroids, might we add), Philips’ newest GoGear Connect is ditching the proprietary OS in favor of Google’s alternative, following Samsung’s Yepp-YP-MB2 into the mysterious world of Android-based PMPs. The product listing shows the 3.2-inch media player as boasting Android 2.1, 16GB of internal storage space, a battery good for 5 hours of video playback (and 25 hours of audio), FM radio tuner, a touchpanel and a microSD expansion slot. Curiously enough, GPS is also thrown in, as are a set of presumably lackluster headphones. It’s listed for a scarily inflated €264.99 ($340), but mum’s the word on an international release — ‘course, it’s not like Philips hasn’t ignored North America before, so we’d recommend not holding your breath.

Drug vending machines start trial in UK, allow awkward videophone conversations with your pharmacist

16 August, 2010

You’ve got to imagine the Japanese are green with envy right now, as the BBC report not one, but two different drug vending machines are being tested out under Her Majesty’s watchful eye. The first of these experiments is run by supermarket chain Sainsbury’s, which has installed a pair of drug dispenser machines in its stores. They identify users by their fingerprint or a unique number, demand PIN verification too, and then finally accept your prescription. Then — and this is the really silly part — a pharmacist comes along, picks up your prescription, fills it out, and deposits it in the machine for you to pick up. So it’s impersonal and unnecessarily convoluted, great. PharmaTrust seems to have a slightly better idea with its videophone-equipped, ATM-style robo-vendor: it’s intended to allow pharmacists to approve prescriptions off-site and out of usual working hours by letting them speak to you via videophone. It could in fact be a big benefit in more remote areas, depending on how patients take to it — we’ll know more when the trial starts up in participating hospitals this winter.Continue reading Drug vending machines start trial in UK, allow awkward videophone conversations with your pharmacistDrug vending machines start trial in UK, allow awkward videophone conversations with your pharmacist originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 16 Aug 2010 07:36:00 EDT. Techknott’s Dreamcast Portable inspires musings on art, life, and Bomberman Online

16 August, 2010

A portable game console mod is like a still life: sure, it’s been done before, but it’s very satisfying when it’s done well. Or, to take the analogy further: where a still life lets the artist arrange the design elements with in a composition any way he wants, the modder works with elements necessary for game play, but is free to arrange them in the manner of his choosing. Our man Techknott, who once thrilled us with his Wireless Visual Interface for the PS3, is back on the scene with the third iteration of his very own Dreamcast Portable — and it just might be a work of art in its own right. This bad boy features: a PSone LCD display, both a built in VMU and a removable VMU slot, CD drive, SD card slot, A/V out, and original Dreamcast controls — all in a custom CNC acrylic case. You want one, right? Peep the video after the break to see it in action. And be sure to check back next week, when we’ll trace the origin of the Bomblympics back to the worship of Zeus in Ancient Greece.Continue reading Techknott’s Dreamcast Portable inspires musings on art, life, and Bomberman OnlineTechknott’s Dreamcast Portable inspires musings on art, life, and Bomberman Online originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 16 Aug 2010 11:27:00 EDT. Premier Elections Solutions pays up in Ohio Diebold suit, offers more faulty voting machines for free

15 August, 2010

Man, this is rich. Some two years after being sued by Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner, Premier Elections Solutions (formerly, and more infamously known as Diebold) has decided to settle up. Way back when, Brunner alleged that the outfit’s touch-screen voting machines weren’t acting as they should, and she pointed to an investigation that proved at least 11 counties were dropped in past elections when their memory cards were uploaded to servers. As of now, Premiere — which is owned by Election Systems & Software — has agreed to pony up just over $470,000 to the 47 counties that touched its e-voting hardware, but that’s hardly the kicker. Counties are also eligible for up to $2.4 million in free Premiere software for two years, and the company’s even throwing in up to 2,909 free voting machines along with a 50 percent coupon for maintenance fees. Right, because the Buckeye State is so anxious to start using the machines it found so faulty to begin with. Makes total sense.

Update: We’ve learned from someone inside of Ohio elections that 11 counties experienced a failed upload of results from a memory card during the unofficial canvas (election night), but those results were recovered during the official canvas several days later. The statewide results included all counties. And know you know.Premier Elections Solutions pays up in Ohio Diebold suit, offers more faulty voting machines for free originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 14 Aug 2010 16:08:00 EDT. The Value Of Bursting

15 August, 2010

Having things burst in the data center does not seem like a very good idea but the term really applies to allowing components of the data center to expand on the fly when there is a peak load and then contract when it has passed. The value of bursting is that it will allow you not to have to design infrastructures for the norm not the worst case, saving capital.

Apple money machine trounces Microsoft — and hints at more to come

15 August, 2010

Apple really is the king. The company’s revenue in the just-reported June quarter was an astonishing $15.7 billion, well above what Wall Street expected and likely somewhat higher than what Microsoft will report on Thursday. I want to underline that development: For the first time in years — and, likely, ever — Apple is bringing in more money than Microsoft.

DRS Armor X10gx gets a handle on military-grade tablet technology, specs it slightly shy

14 August, 2010

DRS’ latest ARMOR tablet hasn’t quite gotten with the times; the new X10gx sports the same 10.4-inch resistive display, a similar 1.2GHz processor and lags behind consumer products in RAM (2GB) and storage (64GB) almost as badly as predecessors two years prior. The badass quotient, however, has gone through the roof… as this magnesium-shelled puppy is now MIL-STD-810G, IP67 and UL1604 certified. To translate that in layman terms, you can (and they did) drop this 4.7 pound Windows 7 tablet from four feet dozens of times, throw it in a meter-deep pool of water and subject it to sub-freezing, sweltering and potentially explosive environments, all while still accepting standard-height 2.5-inch hard drives. Other features for worthy warriors include integrated GPS, 802.11 a/b/g/n WiFi, optional Gobi broadband and the ability to attach external antennas to each, plus hot-swappable 2400mAh batteries to minimize downtime. Smart card, TPM module and fingerprint scanners come standard, of course, and in a singular gesture to the consumer world, there is one HDMI port. No word on price, but given the construction of these machines, we’re not going to pry — it had just better be competitive with Panasonic’s $3,400 device.Continue reading DRS Armor X10gx gets a handle on military-grade tablet technology, specs it slightly shyDRS Armor X10gx gets a handle on military-grade tablet technology, specs it slightly shy originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 13 Aug 2010 08:59:00 EDT. Engadget’s back to school guide: E-readers

14 August, 2010

Welcome to Engadget’s Back to School guide! We know that this time of year can be pretty annoying and stressful for everyone, so we’re here to help out with the heartbreaking process of gadget buying for the school-aged crowd. Today, we have e-readers in our sights — and you can head to the Back to School hub to see the rest of the product guides as they’re added throughout the month.

Yes, it’s the next round of buying advice for those of you condemned to start hitting the books at the end of the summer. But, with one of these e-readers, you might just have fewer books to hit — or at least lighter ones. Sadly most schools are still dependent on texts of the pulpy variety, but that doesn’t mean an e-reader can’t make your life a lot easier at school, and possibly even save you some money if you’re reading the classics.
