Time to get our guessing caps on as HTC has announced it’ll be hosting a little shindig in London in the middle of next month. No advance information is available beyond the smoky teaser image above, leaving the door wide open for speculation. Given the event’s proximity to Windows Phone 7’s launch and the recent spate of leaks, this could easily be the date and place that HTC makes its wares official. Or, on a more tenuous tangent, if you put the smoke and “dreamt up” notes together, you could perhaps surmise that this is going to be the launch for the HTC Vision, which has most recently been referred to as the G1 Blaze. All we know for sure is that we’ll be there when the fog of war is lifted.
P.S. – We’ve enhanced the image to reveal the hint of a handset hidden inside the smoke, you can see it after the break. It looks an awful lot like the back of the Desire HD, but HTC is well known for repeating design themes across its phone portfolio, so let’s not jump to any conclusions just yet.Continue reading HTC schedules September 15 event, leaves us guessing as to what it’s launchingHTC schedules September 15 event, leaves us guessing as to what it’s launching originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 13 Aug 2010 06:14:00 EDT. There were reports as late as this morning that RIM was remaining “defiant” over the looming (and recurring) BlackBerry ban in India and not willing to cut any “special deals,” but it looks like that may not be the case after all — Reuters is reporting that RIM has assured India that it will provide a “technical solution” sometime next week. That’s presumably similar to the arrangement RIM recently worked out with Saudi Arabia, but India still isn’t making any final decisions just yet, with a government source simply saying that its “technical team will evaluate if it works.” Somewhat curiously, the source also mentioned that India had “concerns” about Gmail and Skype, but didn’t offer any further details.
For its part, RIM has issued a customer update that outlines the four main principles that govern the capabilities it provides to carriers for “lawful access purposes.” Head on past the break for the complete statement.Continue reading RIM reportedly working with India to avoid BlackBerry banRIM reportedly working with India to avoid BlackBerry ban originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 13 Aug 2010 12:57:00 EDT. We tell ya, these game bundles are getting completely out of hand… and we love it. If you reckoned that Modern Warfare 2 Prestige Edition bundle was hot stuff, wait till you get a load of this. Call of Duty: Black Ops Prestige Edition (promo video beyond the break) just went up for pre-order at select retailers in the US, and if we had to guess, we’d surmise that every last one of ‘em will claimed in just a few hours. Aside from getting a beastly box, the game itself and some sort of medal, the package also includes a fully functional RC spy car, complete with a camera that sends back video and audio to the owner’s LCD-equipped controller. There’s absolutely no telling what the MSRP on this thing will be, but our comrades over at Joystiq are pegging it at $149.99. Mom, dad — go ahead and add this to our holiday wish list.Continue reading Call of Duty: Black Ops Prestige Edition ships with full-blown RC spy vehicleCall of Duty: Black Ops Prestige Edition ships with full-blown RC spy vehicle originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 13 Aug 2010 11:05:00 EDT. Electric vehicles are inching closer, with several already priced and rearing to go, but so far would-be owners won’t have to pay for the devices to charge their cars. Free charging stations are popping up at every red dot on this map, and apparently not satisfied with the 1,600 that Coulomb’s installing in California and the three at City Hall, San Francisco and neighboring cities have just approved $5 million for over 5,000 more chargers — of which only 50 will appear along public highways, for some reason. Meanwhile, the state of Michigan has approved the first standardized rate for EV charger use — a pilot program by provider DTE Energy will see 2,500 customers paying $40 per vehicle per month (or a variable off-peak rate) through December 2012. Gotta wonder how those grey states are feeling right about now. Samsung’s HDTV-based App Store has doubled in size since it was launched at CES but apparently that’s not enough, so it’s putting up 500 stacks plus several home theater packages in the “Free the TV Apps” contest. For those skilled in Java, XML and Flash Lite who are interested in getting their app up on TVs and Blu-ray players next to ESPN Next Level, Hulu Plus, a soon to launch 3D Video On Demand app and all the rest, the contest runs from today through November 11, and requires a working app submission and video description. By the end, 14 developers will walk away with between $1,000 and $200,000 each, plus a 3DTV, Blu-ray player and starter kit for each of them . We figure developing for a Samsung Apps platform with a few million network connected devices out there and more shipping every day is a secondary bonus (unless Google TV is where you’d rather be) but check out the video and press release after the break or the competition website if you’re still not entirely sure it’s worth the effort.Continue reading Samsung puts up cash, HDTVs for developers in ‘Free the TV Apps’ contestSamsung puts up cash, HDTVs for developers in ‘Free the TV Apps’ contest originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 11 Aug 2010 11:00:00 EDT. After two years of pushing and shoving by the Japanese government, Apple has finally relented, agreeing to replace those first generation iPod nano music players sold in Japan at risk of overheating. The player exchange goes beyond the battery replacement program already in effect for consumers concerned enough to complain directly to Apple. According to Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, of all the plastic black and white iPod nano players sold between September 2005 and December 2006, it confirmed 27 overheating incidents that occurred during recharging, including 6 fires that left four people with minor burns. On Sunday, Apple added 34 other “non-serious” overheating incidents to the tally — a delay in disclosure that Japanese officials called “truly regrettable.” Of course, today’s news begs the question of how Apple will handle this issue for all the affected iPod nanos sold outside of Japan.Apple offers first generation iPod nano replacements in Japan originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 11 Aug 2010 04:07:00 EDT. Fool us once, shame on us. Fool us twice? Fuhgetaboutit. Apple has a thing for introducing new iPods each fall, and given that the existing touch is being given away gratis with a new student computer (not to mention how long in the tooth it is), we’re guessing the tradition will continue in 2010. We’d heard earlier on in the year that Apple may toss FaceTime over to the iPod line whenever it finally gained a front-facing camera, and now the evidence is nearly too strong to ignore. In the latest iOS 4.1 beta (numero three, if you’re keeping count), there’s an option to connect to a contact via FaceTime by ringing their digits or by pinging their email address. We’re guessing that the latter is there mostly for iPod touch users (the ones without Apple Peel 520s, anyway), and it’s the most glaring sign yet that the next generation touch will flippin’ finally boast a camera (or just a way around that SMS-based activation?). Still, we wouldn’t get our hopes up too high — falling ain’t no fun, you know?Email-based FaceTime support surfaces in iOS 4.1 beta 3 originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 07 Aug 2010 14:31:00 EDT. FLO TV may not be the runaway success that Qualcomm hoped it would be, but it’s been pushing into one new area after the next as of late, and you can now add portable DVD players to that list — Audiovox has just rolled out the first such device with its DFL01 player. It was actually announced way back at CES in January, but is now available to order for $199, which will get you a 7-inch widescreen display, three months of free FLO TV service (it’ll run you $14.99 a month after that) and, of course, a built-in DVD player. digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/gadgets/HP_CEO_Mark_Hurd_resigns_over_sex_scandal’;Wild news out of HP just now — CEO Mark Hurd has just resigned over a sexual harassment investigation. Hurd and the HP’s board of directors decided that he should resign following a sexual harassment claim against Hurd and HP by a former marketing contractor — HP claims that although there was no violation of its sexual harassment policy, Hurd violated the company’s standards of business conduct by submitting inaccurate expense reports that covered his relationship with the contractor. CFO Cathie Lesjak is taking over on an interim basis, and she’s actually upping the company’s forecasts for next quarter, saying Mark’s resignation has nothing to do with HP’s performance and everything to do with his behavior. A committee led by former Netscape CEO Marc Andreessen has been formed to find a new CEO; Lesjak has asked to be excluded, and HP declined to answer if Jon Rubinstein was being considered when we asked.
Update: We liveblogged the media call — check it after the break!
Update 2: A quick note from the investor call, which mostly repeated the same info — interim CEO Cathie Lesjak said that although Mark Hurd was a “strong leader, at the end of the day, he didn’t drive our initiatives — it was the organization that supported Mark in driving those initiatives.” Ouch — given Mark’s recent history of saying things like “we didn’t buy Palm to get into the smartphone business,” it certainly seems like he might have been a little distracted.
Update 3: We’ve just received the full text of the letter interim HP CFO Cathie Lesjak sent to all employees — check it after the break.Continue reading HP CEO Mark Hurd resigns over sexual harassment investigation (updated!)HP CEO Mark Hurd resigns over sexual harassment investigation (updated!) originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 06 Aug 2010 17:51:00 EDT. Last we heard from Eurocom, it was touting its massive, workstation-class X8100 Leopard “laptop,” and its now back with a pair of models that are considerably more consumer-friendly — and gamer-friendly, specifically. Those include the 15.6-inch B5100M FOX and 17.3-inch B7110 FOX, which each pack NVIDIA’s Optimus graphics-switching technology (complete with a GeForce GT330M GPU), and a range of other fully customizable options that cover the mid to high-end — your choice of Core i3, i5 or i7 processors, up to 16GB of DDR3 RAM, and support for two hard drives for up to 1.6TB of storage, to name just a few options. Of course, prices will vary wildly depending on the config, but you can grab the base 15.6-inch model for $999, or the 17.3-incher for $1,199.Eurocom debuts Optimus-equipped B5100M FOX, B7110 FOX gaming laptops originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 05 Aug 2010 16:07:00 EDT. Samsung latest 3.5-inch EcoGreen desktop hard disk does with three platters what its F3EG did with four: obtain a 2TB capacity. That’s 667GB per platter for what Samsung calls the world’s highest areal density, environmentally friendly hard disk drive on the market. Specifically, this 3.0Gbps SATA disk with a 32MB buffer brings a 19 percent improved standby performance and requires 23 percent less power in standby mode than its EcoGreen F3EG. Stereoscopic display sharing — or using one monitor to show two separate programs simultaneously — has piqued quite a few people’s interest lately. Say what you like about Apple, as a company it’s not exactly on the forefront when it comes to offering standard connectors for peripherals. Case in point: the latest iMac revisions lack eSATA, something of a bother for companies that make external storage devices. Companies like OWC. So, that particular organization is introducing a service to add that to 27-inch iMacs, cutting a small hole into the bottom-right of the display and sticking an eSATA port behind it. It’s a nice idea, the results look flush enough, and 48-hour turn-around time is great — but $169 is hardly small change. You can, however, take that time to get a 480GB Mercury Extreme Pro SSD stuffed in there as well for a mere $1,649 more.OWC will cut a hole in your new 27-inch iMac, put an eSATA port behind it originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 02 Aug 2010 09:36:00 EDT. We were secretly hoping that RIM’s acquisition of the blackpad.com domain name was nothing more than a joke (or a preventative measure, at worse), but it sure sounds as if that’ll be the name the folks in Waterloo go with come this winter. Said sources have also stated that the device will sport a 9.7-inch display, inbuilt WiFi and Bluetooth, and a downright comical Blackpad label. We get the BlackBerry link and all, but really? It’s fairly safe to say that DMC Worldwide’s Copia e-reader family won’t exactly make that estimated Spring 2010 ship date, but a new report over at The Wall Street Journal is cluing us in on a bit of a revised outlook. As of now, the first Copia suite of e-readers will “hit stores this fall in time for the holiday season,” a suite that’ll presumably include the 5-inch color (LCD) Wave 5 for $99, a 7-inch Wave 7 for $129, a 10-inch Ocean Color for $299 and a pair of E Ink-based options for $49 (Tidal) / $159 (Tidal WiFi). It doesn’t seem as if the two Waves will include any sort of wireless connectivity, and given the LCD display, we’re sure that battery life will be nowhere near as good as the marginally-more-expensive Kindle. That said, the user interface does look rather striking from afar, and if these manage to slip a bit further in price before that magical day in December, you could very well see a rush to stuff stockings with a member of this here family. Give those links below a poke if you’re on the prowl for more detailed specifications.DMC’s 5-inch Copia color e-reader landing this fall for $99, others to follow originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 30 Jul 2010 10:06:00 EDT. We’re not far from seeing this big update in the flesh, but in the meanwhile, EVO 4G owners (and fans) might be interested to take a closer look at the features they’ll be getting once it arrives. HTC appears to have put surprising effort into rendering a lifelike torch for its Flashlight app, while app sharing (seen after the break) is a neat addition — and don’t worry, devs, it only works on items that aren’t copy protected. We’re also being told that the update has car dock-specific functionality, which will match up with a dock release somewhere around the second week of September. Has everyone decided what dark things they plan on illuminating with their EVO’s LED once this thing goes live?Continue reading EVO 4G’s Froyo features detailed in pictures, car dock coming in September?EVO 4G’s Froyo features detailed in pictures, car dock coming in September? originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 30 Jul 2010 11:17:00 EDT. After years of pleading, the fine folks over at Data Robotics finally gifted you with a Drobo NAS. They called it the Drobo FS, but we all know what the real skinny is. But is the five-bay, Ethernet-friendly storage robot really a dream come true? We’ve had nothing but success with it in our Time Machine setup, but as with pretty much any networked drive, we’ve heard reports here and there of frustrations and complications. For those who have sprung for the FS, we’re curious to hear what you’d change about the setup. Need more drive bays? Would you prefer a few extra interface options? Would you make the box a little less noisy? Go ahead and get honest down in comments below — we know you need an avenue to vent after the week you just survived, right? How would you change the Drobo FS? originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 31 Jul 2010 01:01:00 EDT. It’s just been a few months since a 45-gigapixel panorama of Dubai claimed the title of world’s largest digital photograph, but it’s now already been well and truly ousted — the new king in town is this 70-gigapixel, 360-degree panorama of Budapest. As with other multi-gigapixel images, this one was no easy feat, and involved two 25-megapixel Sony A900 cameras fitted with 400mm Minolta lenses and 1.4X teleconverters, a robotic camera mount from 360world that got the shooting done over the course of two days, and two solid days of post-processing that resulted in a single 200GB file — not to mention a 15-meter-long printed copy of the photograph for good measure. Of course, what’s most impressive is the photo itself. Hit up the source link below and start zooming in.70-gigapixel panorama of Budapest becomes world’s largest digital photograph originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 30 Jul 2010 08:27:00 EDT. An update to Apple’s Safari Web addresses longstanding complaints about the difficulty of Safari plugin development.
Your average satellite these days is roughly on par in terms of size with your average living room, give or take, and so naturally the cost of lofting one into orbit is, if you’ll pardon the phrase, sky high. Despite that, many offer less processing power a mobile processor like Snapdragon. The obvious solution? Chuck a smartphone into orbit and revel in the savings. That’s the idea behind the PhoneSat, helped along by the Mavericks Civilian Space Foundation, which strapped a Nexus One into a rocket with 1,000lbs of thrust and threw it up to 28,000 feet to see how it copes with the immense stress of riding into space. Of course, 28,000 feet isn’t quite space (NASA would have run out of astronaut badges long ago), but the G-forces and temperature cycles felt during this short trip are comparable to a one-way voyage to orbit. The first such launch didn’t go so well, with the rocket suffering a ballistic return — coming in like a projectile without a ‘chute. The shattered remains of that are shown above. But, the second flight was rather more successful, and the video results can be seen below — captured by the phone itself.
Update: Matt Reyes, one of the folks behind the launch, wrote in to let us know of another article here on the project, including more details on the history of the team and the various hardware beyond the N1 payload. Matt and many others working on this project are NASA engineers, which probably helps to explain how they were able to get from the photo above to the successful launch below in just one iteration.Continue reading Nexus One blasts off to 28,000 feet, looks slightly worse for wear (video)Nexus One blasts off to 28,000 feet, looks slightly worse for wear (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 30 Jul 2010 14:40:00 EDT. Slowly but surely, Samsung’s future as a tablet PC provider is taking shape. Details on the outfit’s foray into the world of the slate has been trickling out over the past few months, and shortly after learning that a so-called Galaxy Tab would be out and about in Q3, now we’re finding out two more critical details: screen size and operating system. According to the company, the Q3-bound device (assumed to be the aforesaid Galaxy Tab) will boast a smaller-than-average 7-inch screen, and rather than humming along on Bada or Windows 7, Google’s Android will be at the helm. We’re being forced to wait for further information, but given the proximity to Q3, all should be crystal clear in the not-too-distant future.

We know you’ve got questions, and if you’re brave enough to ask the world for answers, here’s the outlet to do so. This week’s Ask Engadget question is coming to us from Ryan, who reckons it’s about time he stopped playing with Lego blocks and began playing with a real man’s robot platform. Just kidding about the Lego bit. If you’re looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.
“I am an aspiring roboticist who has been using Lego Mindstorms NXT for a few years and I am looking for the next step up. I have a budget of about $400. I am looking for something that has more motors, more sensors, and a way to have it live feed video back to a computer. I would also like a platform that has a large amount of building that can be done on top of it, such as adding an arm or another array of sensors, or a different drive base. I’m new to the world of robotics outside of the NXT, so any tips would be appreciated as well. Thanks!”
Come on over, robot lovers. Toss those gloves and goggles aside for a moment and throw this guy some advice. We’re not experts or anything, but cutting down trees to manufacture your headphones ($30), ear buds ($20), and iPhone cases ($25) does not really seem all that “green” to us. But what good is selling stuff made from “reusable, environmentally friendly and recyclable materials” if you can’t broadcast your sense of social responsibility with “rustic wood grain finishes and smooth earthy tones” that “mirror the true beauty that surrounds us?” Is we right, or is we right? The Grass Roots Collection (get it?) starts shipping August 1st. PR after the break.
Update: A rep from iWave just sent in an email to assure us that no trees whatsoever were harmed in the making of the Grass Roots collection. Billed as “the Segway’s little sister,” this self-balancing electro scooter comes from a small German company called Ewee. The idea behind it is pretty simple: file down all the extraneous bits, keep the stuff that keeps you going, and presumably try to sell it to hardy macho types who like the barebones aesthetic. You accelerate by leaning forward and decelerate by doing the opposite, while steering is handled by a joystick (apparently “driving pleasure is gauranteed”). We’re not sure how much trust we’re willing to invest in either the company or its product, but exclusive retailer fun-components does have it ready for pre-order today, so if you’re feeling adventurous with your €799 ($1,039), feel free to pay their site a visit. Well, we knew it wouldn’t take very long, and it didn’t: iFixit’s gotten its hands on Apple’s Magic Trackpad and ripped it to shreds. This is one operation they’re not shy about calling delicate, folks — this thing is seriously thin and its components packed in quite lovingly. So what’s going on in there? Well, besides the magical dust, they found a Broadcom BCM2042 chip, which is the same one the Magic Mouse uses for Bluetooth connectivity, and a Broadcom BCM5974 touchscreen controller chip, which also powers the iPhone and iPod touch. There is plenty to be seen in the photos at the source, and there’s one more below.Continue reading Apple’s Magic Trackpad gets the iFixit teardown treatment, nothing terribly magical foundApple’s Magic Trackpad gets the iFixit teardown treatment, nothing terribly magical found originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 29 Jul 2010 09:17:00 EDT. What is it about the word peel that screams “throw on the back of an iPod touch and grant it the power of mobile internet?” We spotted Yosion’s Apple Peel 520 just this morning bound for Chinese markets, and now the FCC has unveiled ZTE’s own Peel 3G router. Although the user manual and external photos don’t explicitly state it, one look at the (slightly enhanced) image above removes all doubt that this is made to fit snugly around a certain finger-friendly iDevice with a headset jack on the bottom right. Additionally, the user manual’s setup screens are all sketched out in what appears to be a more mobile Safari-friendly size. The Qualcomm-powered CDMA2000 case is brandishing Sprint logos on the front and back, which frankly wouldn’t be the first (or even second) time the carrier’s targeted the Apple faithful. Only this time, there’s no WiMAX — bummer. Crafty, wacky, zany? We’re sure Mr. Hesse is chortling, but perhaps he can catch a breath or two and disseminate out some proper release details post-haste. Copy protection has always been a concern in the Android Market, primarily because applications can be sideloaded onto phones without a root or other modification from the end user. In a brief announcement made today, Eric Chu has made clear that a new method for protecting the work of paid app creators will be implemented long-term, with the plan being to “replace the current Android Market copy-protection mechanism over the next few months.” This new “licensing service” is available now for those that want in, providing developers with a secure mechanism that can ping a Market License Server upon launch in order to see if a particular app was indeed purchased legitimately. It’s hard to say how exactly this will affect usability (specifically in offline scenarios), but it’s certainly an interesting twist to the whole situation. Expect to hear lots of growling on both sides as more and more apps opt to take advantage.

It may not exactly be a huge surprise at this point, but GM has finally revealed that the official base price for its Chevrolet Volt will be $41,000 (including a $720 destination charge). That price is before the $7,500 federal tax credit, however, which will bring your eventual end cost down to a slightly more reasonable $33,500. Those looking to get on the road for even less up-front can also opt for a three-year lease, which will run you $350 a month after a $2,500 down payment. As Autoblog notes, you’ll also have an option to purchase the car at the end of the lease, so GM won’t be repeating its infamous EV1 scenario. Still too much for you? Then you might just want to wait a bit — GM says it will also be offering the Volt with less features and a lower price point “within a year or two.”Chevy Volt officially priced at $41,000, $350/month on a three-year lease originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 27 Jul 2010 13:03:00 EDT.
